Captain America #366

Issue(s): Captain America #366Cover Date: Jan 90Title: "Remote control"Credits: Mark Gruenwald - WriterRon Lim - PencilerDan Bulanadi - InkerMike Rockwitz - Assistant EditorRalph Macchio - Editor

Review/plot:Henry Pym has examined the Sub-Mariner...

*

...and also has identified that his crucial signs are steady yet he"s afrassist of taking off the control disc without causing neurological damage. So Captain America tells Fabian Stankowicz to work via Pym to uncover a way to track the disc"s broadactors signal earlier to the Controller.

You are watching: I command you to wank

Meanwhile, the Acts of Vengeance arch-villains conclude their initially main meeting (through all the members together at once)...

*

*

When the Red Skull retransforms to his office, he finds Crossbones waiting for him, and also it"s remarkable the amount of attitude that he toleprices from his laccrucial.

*

*

Crossbones reflects up and tries to help him gain the disc on Thor, but he misses and also hits the Juggernaut rather (and it looks like the disc shatters against his armor/forcearea, which is why the Controller doesn"t get manage of Jugs).

The Controller is not happy about Crossbones" interference, but that"s wright here the Red Skull"s "mouthpiece", who is actually the minor villain known as the Voice, comes into play.

For you European juveniles, here"s the well known "Captain America, I command also you to -- WANK" panel. Note that there"s some wanking going on in the panel over, as well.

The Controller winds up falling out of the aircraft, and Cap jumps out after him, counting on the Controller"s boot jets.

They perform endure the fall, yet the the Controller appears to efficiently acquire a disc on Cap.

But it turns out that Cap had actually a cybernetic plate on his neck, under his costume. It protects Cap and also gives him the manage disc that he wanted to lug to Pym to help Namor. The Controller is shelp not to notification given that adding Captain America"s stamina to the Sub-Mariner"s would have actually a negligible effect, however it"s not sassist why the Controller doesn"t attempt to regulate or capture Cap while he has him knocked out in front of him. It can be that the Voice tells the Controller to rerotate and also the Controller hregarding obey that order exceptionally especially.

Once the Red Skull has actually the Controller back, he tries to use him to obtain regulate of the mysterious Acts of Vengeance facilitator. But his attempts fail. First because no one however the Skull is allowed with his magic door...

...and also then simply bereason it just does not work-related.

I carry out choose seeing the Skull make the attempt.

Also in this concern, Diamondearlier opts to not steal some clothing to replace her torn costume, on the grounds that it would certainly burn the bridge between her and also Cap.

These Cap worries of Acts of Vengeance are fun, in part because tbelow is many emphasis on the villains, and tbelow are the majority of cool villains to be supplied. Ron Lim"s art, which, per the lettercol sounds choose it was a rush task, is nonethemuch less pretty excellent. The praise for Lim in the lettercol is that "the kid"s as rapid as he is good". Dwyer will return next worry however Ron Lim through come to be the constant artist beginning through #368.

Chronological Placement Considerations: This begins with Henry Pym having actually examined the Sub-Mariner, placing it after his take a trip to the East shore following Avengers West Coast #53. A percent of this issue takes area concurrently through Thor"s fight with the Juggernaut in Thor #411. A meeting at the start of this problem in between the cabal of Acts of Vengeance arch-villains is defined in a narration panel as "the first meeting of the greatest subversive minds on the planet ever before assembled in one room". There"s a difficulty through that. Thor #411 hregarding take area after Destiny"s death in Uncanny X-Men #255, bereason Firestar shows up in Marvel Comics Presents #82-87 after Destiny"s death however prior to joining the New Warriors. But Wolverine #19-20 takes area prior to Uncanny X-Men #255, and Wolverine #19 reflects the Red Skull as component of the AoV cabal. And aget, this story shows Red Skull having simply joined the cabal yet also is conexisting via Thor #411. That"s a headache, however i have actually Captain America #366 placed prior to Wolverine #19 through Uncanny X-Men #255, with the concept that the Red Skull"s initially meeting concludes in time for him to show up in Wolverine and all the other X-publications to happen, and also then at some time significnatly later on we view the Thor/Juggernaut fight.

Issues #365-367 have actually a Cobra & Hyde back-up story that i cover in a separate enattempt.

References: Avengers Island also was sunk in Avengers #311.It"s stated that the Controller as soon as operated via Thanos and that might be just how his current regulate discs are so high technology. Later Cap mentions that the Controller as soon as attacked him from behind. Both occasions are from Captain Marvel #28 (although just the second occasion gets the footnote).Thor"s fight with the Juggernaut is from Thor #411-412 (per the footnote, but considering that the New Warriors do not seem to be present the percentage we view is most likely from #411).Crossbones sees Captain America for the first time after thinking that he eliminated him with an explosion in Madripoor in Captain America #364.

Crossover: Acts of Vengeance

I LOVE Crossbones; I assume Skull tolerates him bereason Bones has a sort of childchoose fanboyish love for Skull. Crossbones for me was the prototypical "uber cool, wisecracking killer" trope that came to be a cliche in the late 80s and 90s but totally devoid of any type of redeemable features.

Amazing: in a couple of years the Voice goes from a has-been whose first and also just appearance in forever before was against Ant-Man in the 60s (pre-Wasp)...to one of the a lot of meme-worthy panels exterior Joker"s obsession via "boners". Some obscure villains would certainly die to obtain that proactivity in notcapability.

Oh, this is the book where Captain America wanks. :P

You must view the next panel wright here he is required to carry out the Voices command also....actually, you shouldn"t. nobody should:-)

I"m actually glad that was mentioned. I almost never look at the sound impact words (except in Simonson"s Thor), so I never would certainly have actually noticed that otherwise.

I"ve ran right into some conflict whether the "WANK" panel was an intentional gag or not. In my opinion, the setting up of the Voice"s command also, complied with by the sound result, feels too perfect to be a mere coincidence... And it"s not choose "wank" is a particularly obscure Britishism, so it seem perfectly possible Gruenwald would certainly recognize it. Did he ever comment on that panel himself?
